On Northern Ireland

Joy and her husband spent the latter part of their honeymoon in Northern Ireland in April 2012. The two encountered no problems whatsoever crossing the border from the Republic of Ireland into Northern Ireland. In fact, they were surprised that they did not even need to stop the car to show their passports to border control.

After a long 6-hour drive, a tired Joy and her equally tired husband were welcomed by Elaine, the owner of what would turn out to be their favorite bed and breakfast on the entire island, Pinetrees Bed & Breakfast. After a good night’s sleep and made-to-order breakfast, Joy and her husband headed out to Northern Ireland’s only Unesco World Heritage site, the Giant’s Causeway. Joy had been looking forward to seeing this natural wonder, but imagined the site would be larger than she found it given its name and all. Luckily, Joy’s entertaining husband managed to cheer her up after her initial disappointment on a walk over to The Giant’s Boot, a large rock in the shape of a boot, and The Organ, a formation of rocks set into the hillside that resemble an organ’s pipes. Later that afternoon the two made the trek out to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, where they hung on with both hands as they crossed the rickety bridge and enjoyed views of the west coast of Scotland on the other side.

In a serendipitous turn of events, Joy and her husband arrived into Belfast on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The two were thrilled to secure tickets the next day to the Titanic Belfast in this capital city’s Titanic Quarter. After just a few hours at the Titanic Belfast, the two agreed it topped both their lists of favorite museums in the world. They would have spent the whole day enjoying the myriad of interactive exhibits had they not needed to catch a plane out of Dublin later that same afternoon.
